THE CHILDREN OF THE WHITNEY

When I think of the law that America enacted in 1808, a child comes out of the clay. On that first day when my fingers discovered that they could sculpt the image of an African ancestor into existence through fired clay or bronze, I stood in my studio as the sun came up. I saw how my forebears overcame despair and learned to survive. I saw that they conquered fear to fit into a country that was not theirs. They learned the ways and language of a new country and helped the young America on its way to becoming a great nation. And through their suffering, they grew invincible. In Ibrahima's story, in knowing about Angela, in stories of enslaved children who played and told jokes and learned skills amid hardships, I realized their strength. And I felt that their strength had been passed down to me, I am the future of my ancestor's history.                               Woodrow Nash

These Statues represent actual  enslaved children who lived and worked on Whitney Plantation near New Orleans, LA.
