John Lister
Born in Shreveport, La in 1985 of July 8th, John Lister, III spent a majority of his life between Maryland and Louisiana. He claims his first stint at creating, was at a very young age with his food, i.e. oatmeal. He would take his toddler hands and draw abstractly in the overturned bowl remnants of oatmeal. Upon seeing this, his educator grandmother, whom he named "Grants" thought it be wise to introduce crayons and coloring books to the young child.
The usage of different medias is very apparent and abundant within the pieces as the artist uses whatever allows color to be applied: Oil stick, oil pastel, papier collage, soft pastel, acrylic, and spray paint. Art is historical as it is personal. Each art piece produced will deal with history whether it be large or small. The art pieces show heroism, kingship, fertility and religion of antiquity of West Afrika and the Afrikan Diaspora.The artist pulls fragments of West Afrikan art and uses techniques from periods like cubism, primitivism, abstract expressionism to create what the artist deems: Post-Neo Expressionism or Post Abstract Expressionism.
The artist pulls influences from Aaron Douglas, Cy Twombe, Paul Goodnight, Jacob Lawrence, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Frida Khalu and Pablo Picasso.
